And now for some humor

Here is another sculpture that I just completed in clay.  It is now at the foundry for bronze casting.  It depicts a girl dreamily gazing down at her outstretched foot.  I did a lot of hand wringing before deciding on a title and decided to name it  After the Pedicure!

New: a sculpture for the pandemic experience

Art expressing the predicament we are in. This is a clay sculpture that I just finished that speaks to living in the midst of the pandemic. It is now at the foundry to be cast in bronze. Titled, Into the Unknown, it captures a sense of abandon. You could say that the figure has cast his fate to the wind. Is he afraid? Or is he open to what the future holds? Or both? I see the sculpture as art mirroring our experience in these uncertain times.

It’s Trademarked!

I just received word from the United States Trademark and Patent Office that I have successfully trademarked the phrase INSPIRATION IN BRONZE.  It is a lengthy process to meet the requirements to secure a trademark. I am gratified to now be able to use it as part of my branding, particularly because I strive in my sculptures to inspire you the viewer.

Gallery Mack now representing David Varnau’s artwork

In Seattle!

For some time, I have been wanting to have my sculptures displayed in a reputable fine art gallery in Seattle.  Although I was already represented at galleries in Edmonds and LaConner, Washington as well as one in Santa Fe, NM, I have had my eyes on Gallery Mack for some time.

43271734_317943758785405_7633379142490128384_oThe gallery has a new owner, Eric Brown, and he has agreed to represent my work.  Gallery Mack, located in just off the waterfront near Pike Place Market and Bell Town in Seattle, is a large and beautiful gallery.  It displays contemporary art from regional artists. For more than 30 years, Gallery Mack has presented unique works in glass, wood, painting and bronze and the gallery is one of very few that offers figurative bronze sculpture in the Seattle art market.  Stop in and feel enriched by the wonderful collection of art to be seen in this well-lit gallery!

New sculpture!

Hearts Uplifted

I want to share with you a sculpture that I just finished sculpting in clay.  IMG_0503Titled Hearts Uplifted, it captures a fleeting moment of closeness–their intimate gaze speaks to a connection that transcends time.  The sculpture is now at the foundry and is to be cast in bronze.  It is a vision of embracing joy.

Ka-Boom! Driver and Sculpture Survive–with injuries

resized 2I recently received a text message from an art collector who had bought one of my sculptures last May, Back then, at his request, I had installed the sculpture, Joie de Vivre, on his rock wall that borders the street. He was delighted with it. The installation had been a real logistical challenge since the sculpture weighs 150# and needed to be anchored on top of a 4 foot high stone column. Everything was hunky dory until last week when I got a text from him saying that the wall had just been hit by a car. Turns out that a dude in a stolen car was being chased by police, lost control of his car and plowed through the wall at 3 am, pushing the entire wall off its footer. car that plowed through wall

Surprisingly, the driver survived, but went to the hospital. Then, to jail. overI stopped by the site and was amazed at the destruction! bent fingers 2There was some damage to the sculpture’s right arm and hand that is going to require removing her and taking her to the foundry for repairs. I guess the guys and I did a hell of a job mounting the sculpture given that the sculpture remained anchored to the stone column–in spite of the impact!

over from rear 3This was the SECOND time that the property owner’s wall had been taken out by a car crashing into it! I had been asked to install the sculpture after the wall was rebuilt following the first crash, which was about 3 years ago. That car was driven by a 16 year old girl who did not survive the crash, partly because her car went further down the ridge into the trees and caught fire before responders could rescue her. I will end this tale with what the property owner then texted me later. Turns out that the mother of the girl who had died in the previous crash lives nearby and was touched last spring when she saw that a sculpture of a little girl had been installed at the site of her daughter’s death. She told the property owner that, each time she drove by after the sculpture was installed, she saw it as the joyful spirit of her daughter. Needless to say, the mother found it distressing to see the sculpture down! As did I. While the wall is being reconstructed, Joie de Vivre will be repaired at the foundry and then re-installed.

Dramatic, gravity-defying sculptures!

I am excited about my two newly completed, dramatic sculptures.  Both are designed to visually appear as though they defy gravity.

Letting Go!

Website 5Depicted in the sculpture is a male figure seen powerfully lunging forward.   We see him mid-step as he thrusts his body into the unknown. In this image, I chose to render an image of a male charging headlong, but with his upper body twisting away, suggesting a change of heart. What I find intriguing is the tension between the male default of seeking to be in control and his recognition that, at times, he must let go. Website 4Website 2

Ascent

In this sculpture, I endeavored to create an image that depicts those moments when our spirit soars. At such a time, it is as though we shed old, limiting perspectives and experience life afresh. Suddenly, our spirit is liberated, we feel a sense of exhilaration and lightness. Website 2 Website 5The sense of possibility is palpable. It’s then that our heart leaps and our life-force dances. Website 6
