When rendering Embrace, I was motivated to create this visual image of the female figure with the crossing lines of her arms, which the eye first sees as the primary gesture. But then, upon closer viewing, one sees the spiral of her torso as she twists and looks over her left shoulder. The arms clasped over her breast give the impression of self-restraint. There arises the image of holding oneself in her own arms, reflecting the beauty of self-possession. Yet, it conjures the question of whether she is feeling vulnerability or strength-or both.
