{"id":654,"date":"2015-01-18T04:45:48","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T04:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/davidvarnau.com\/blog\/?p=654"},"modified":"2015-01-18T05:03:51","modified_gmt":"2015-01-18T05:03:51","slug":"please-touch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidvarnau.com\/blog\/654\/please-touch","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Please Touch!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"color: #174780;\" align=\"left\">Edmonds Community College Art gallery features an interactive and collaborative exhibit Jan. 5-March 13<\/h2>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0Edmonds Community College\u2019s art gallery this winter will feature works from Jim Ballard and several other sculptors, including David Varnau, in an exhibit titled \u201cPlease Touch.\u201d It opens Jan. 5 and continues through March 13 in the college\u2019s art gallery on the third floor of Lynnwood Hall, 20000 68th Ave. W. \u00a0A reception with the artists is 3:30-6:30 p.m., Fri., Jan. 23 in the college art gallery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The exhibit is interactive and collaborative and explores the themes of air, earth, the human form, and sound through a variety of media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Ballard and his colleagues, sculptors Richard Hestekind and David Varnau, along with various teams of people have\u00a0created an experiential art installation that focuses on touch, sound, and motion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Collaborative aspects of the exhibit took place during fall quarter as part of Ballard&#8217;s artist-in-residence program. The program involved Edmonds CC students and instructors, blind or visually impaired local community members, and others who shared their ideas. They worked together to develop methods of executing the art and created tactile works.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_655\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/davidvarnau.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/stag-beetle.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-655\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-655\" src=\"http:\/\/davidvarnau.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/stag-beetle.jpg\" alt=\"a blind user traces the outline of a Stag Beetle embossment to gain a sense of the shape of the insect\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">a blind user traces the outline of a Stag Beetle embossment to gain a sense of the shape of the insect<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">This exhibit invites children and adults who want to discover more about the world to &#8220;Please Touch.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8220;I attempt to show through detailed paper embossments and other tactile illustrations aspects<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> of the world that might remain unknowable to a person who is blind or visually impaired,&#8221; said Ballard. &#8220;I hope that through my work both children and adults can discover more about the world through touch.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The exhibit is sponsored by the college&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"library\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edcc.edu\/library\/default.html\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">library<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Visual Arts department\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edcc.edu\/visualarts\/default.html\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Visual Arts department<\/span><\/a>, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Center for Student Engagement and Leadership\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edcc.edu\/csel\/default.html\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Center for Student Engagement and Leadership<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as well as the<a title=\"Edmonds Art Festival Foundation Board\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eaffoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Edmonds Art Festival Foundation Board<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The gallery is open 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday; and 1-5 p.m., weekends.
